Nottinghamshire is a sporty county – and not only in high-profile events. At the Athens Olympics, for example, our local heroes included Nathan Robertson, a badminton silver medal winner (half of the first British doubles team to compete in an Olympic final). Other Nottinghamshire winners included kayakers Campbell Walsh and Helen Reeves (who won silver and bronze medals respectively) while Mary King was part of Britain’s silver medal-winning Equestrian Team. We’re used to welcoming other national and international events. In 2004 and 2005, the East Midlands’ stage of the Tour of Britain (cycling) came to an exciting finish at Nottingham’s Victoria Embankment. Nottingham played host to hundreds of visitors to the Harris British Open Squash Championships in 2004, also known as 'the Wimbledon of squash'. We were proud to announce that we once again welcomed the Dunlop British Open Squash Championships in 2006. We also played host to the International Cheerleading Championships at the Trent FM Arena Nottingham and our annual Experian Robin Hood Marathon is now firmly established on the athletic calendar. For those who prefer to get seriously active, there are also a number of local outward bound centres offering quad biking, karting, rock climbing, abseiling and archery. < back to Sports
