National Ice Centre

Cool venue: the National Ice Centre

The £42 million National Ice Centre provides Nottinghamshire with a unique multi-purpose entertainment centre containing the following facilities:

  • up to 10,000 seats in a fabulous state-of-the-art facility built to host the cream of sport and entertainment
  • two Olympic-sized ice pads and sports facilities for all ages and abilities
  • ice hockey with one of the UK’s top teams, the Nottingham Panthers
  • ice dance training
  • recreational skating for everyone
  • disabled access

Of course, the Olympic ice skating champions, Torvill and Dean, are local heroes. In 1984, the Nottingham pair won Olympic gold medals in Sarajevo for their interpretation of Ravel’s Bolero. Later that year, they were the joint winners of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. In 1994, they made a dramatic return to the Olympic stage in Lillehammer, Norway and took the bronze medal.  Both Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean were awarded OBEs in 1999.
