Capital for culture

Legendary literature

Nottinghamshire has inspired poets and novelists throughout the ages – from the romance of Byron to the controversy of Lawrence and the groundbreaking work of Alan "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning" Sillitoe. If that's not enough, the celebrated author of Peter Pan, JM Barrie began his career in journalism here. Our modern day award-winning authors include John Harvey and the late Helen Cresswell.

Nottingham's most famous contemporary author, Alan Sillitoe, is to be made an Honorary Freeman of the City of Nottingham at a special ceremony in June this year.

Legendary heroes

The story of Robin Hood strikes a chord with people all over the world. Here in Nottinghamshire we can show you the legend's heart. The story comes to life among Sherwood Forest's ancient oaks and within the brooding walls of Nottingham Castle.
