Individual inspiration - Nottingham

Capital for culture

From legendary folk heroes and literary greats to fashion gurus and sporting stars, Nottinghamshire is linked with people who've helped change the world.

These are the stories of just a few of our heroes...

Alan Sillitoe - Honorary Freeman of the City of Nottingham

Alan Sillitoe, Nottingham's most famous contemporary author, was made an Honorary Freeman of the City of Nottingham at a special ceremony in June 2008. He became Nottingham's 35th Honorary Freeman since William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army, was the first person to be honoured in this way in 1905. Find out more about Alan Sillitoe.

The Freedom of the City is granted by Nottingham City Council to people of distinction and people who have rendered eminent service to the City.

Tim Reddish MBE, Director of British Disability Swimming and Mich Stevenson OBE, Deputy Lieutenant, Notts, were made honorary freemen in 2005. International fashion designer Sir Paul Smith was honoured in 1997. In 1993, the honour was given to Nottingham Forest Manager Brian Clough who took the team to double European glory. Legendary ice skaters Torvill and Dean were made honorary freemen in 1983. And in 1976 Everest mountaineer and record-breaking high altitude climber Doug Scott, also born in Nottingham, was honoured.
