Sideshow takes the best of contemporary art to the streets of Nottingham 09/02/06
"~ a minor incident or issue that diverts attention from the main subject ~"
Sideshow is sponsored by Berryman 21 April to 4 June 2006, venues across Nottingham and the East Midlands
Bringing together over 40 artists, Sideshow takes the best of contemporary art to the streets of Nottingham, filling the city with an exhilarating and stimulating array of new work. Created in response to the British Art Show 6, Sideshow is an independent artist-led initiative, showcasing art that has been created in direct response to its own unique and unusual location, from art on bus tickets to chewing gum constellations on the pavements.
Sideshow covers a range of media, from drawing and performance to sound and sculptural installations. Naomi Kashiwagi shows delicate ink drawings made using a piano whilst DOT fashion a city from cardboard and acclaimed Cuban performance artist Adonis Flores Betancourt creates body sculptures that respond to the streets of Nottingham.
Whilst UK wide and international, Sideshow demonstrates the scope and diversity of the art scene in the region, defying audience expectations. Taking art out of the gallery and into everyday life, Sideshow uses the public to complete the work through direct participation and interaction; Daniel Lehan explores ideas of privacy and voyeurism in Hide, Ayling & Conroy build a landscape of wonders in their living room and Lucy Gibson creates an audio tour of the city.
The Birmingham music scene of the 60’s and 70’s is explored by The Real Rock Archive, whilst the Caravan Gallery’s custom-made postcards of UK cities reveal familiar, but often overlooked aspects of British life. Unique and playful, challenging to both audience and artists, this is a Sideshow that can’t be missed.
